Orange routs Person to rack up 11th straight nonconference win

Eryk Brandon-Dean scored three touchdowns and racked up 124 yards rushing as Orange scored on its first five possessions to cruise past Person 42-7 Friday night.

Bryse Wilson, a star pitcher expected to be selected in next spring’s Major League Draft, added two receiving touchdowns as the Panthers piled up 35 points before the Rockets could get a first down.

Junior quarter Jackson Schmid, making his first varsity start, threw three touchdowns as the Panthers captured its 11th consecutive nonconference regular season win, dating Back to 2012.

Schmid’s 51-yard strike to Brandon-Dean with 4:23 remaining in the third quarter was the final Panther tally of the night. Orange’s defense held Person to five yards total offense and one first down in the first half.

Demares Drummond added a 1-yard touchdown run in the first half that gave Orange a 21-0 lead.

Person’s lone score came when Dontavian Smith scored on a 5-yard touchdown run.

Turning point: After forcing a three-and-out on Person’s first drive, Orange’s Bryse Wilson blocked Drew Clayton’s punt. Brandon-Dean scored on a 30-yard touchdown run two plays later for the first score, and the rout was on.

Highlight reel: In his first varsity game, Schmid showed poise in throwing a 51-yard touchdown pass to Brandon-Dean on Orange’s final touchdown of the game.

Unsung hero: Orange offensive tackles Austin Sykes and Jace Jordan-Cornell, who sealed the corners on touchdown runs by Brandon-Dean and Demares Drummond that broke the game open early.
