St. David’s tramples Northeast Academy 70-6 in 8-man football

St. David’s gave up an early touchdown but answered that with touchdowns on all eight first half possessions to roll to a 70-6 win over Lasker’s Northeast Academy in a NCISAA eight-man football win.

The Warriors are 5-0 and have scored at least 50 points in every game.

“(Northeast) moved the ball on the first two possessions, but the defense bowed up a little and I was proud of that,” St. David’s coach Daniel Evans said.

Turning point

St. David’s led 8-6 midway the first quarter when the Eagles’ Matthew Little broke away for a potential long touchdown run. The Warriors’ Melvin Briggs ran down Little at the 5-yard line after a 72-yard gain. The St. David’s defense kept the Eagles out of the end zone then and for the rest of the game.

They said it

“This is a great senior class leading this team. They’re not just good athletes, there’s also good chemistry on this team, a lot of good guys,” said St. David’s coach Daniel Evans about his his team’s success so far this season.

3 who mattered

Melvin Briggs, St. David’s: Rushed for 118 yards on 10 carries, all in the first half and scored 3 touchdowns. “He’s not only our leading rusher he also made the big tackle that kept them out of the end zone and that got our defense going,” Evans said.

John Mac Feeney, St. David’s: Bounced back from losing a fumble to score on a 77-yard run at the end of the game.

Braxton Montague, St. David’s: Scored a touchdown and led the defense. “Braxton is a defensive leader for us and plays a lot of different positions on defense and offense, filling in wherever we need him,” Evans said.

By the numbers

2: Touchdown passes by St. David’s junior quarterback Garrett Lewis on just 3 passes. “We haven’t had to pass much, but Garrett’s playing well,” Evans said. “He’s probably our most improved player from a year ago.”

23: Offensive plays St. David’s ran in the first half, with 8 going for scores.
