Rolesville rides defense, balanced offense past Southeast Raleigh football
Rolesville dominated Greater Neuse foe Southeast Raleigh 36-6 Thursday night behind a relentless defense and and a quick and balanced offense.
The Rams are now 2-0 in the league and 4-2 overall with a matchup at East Wake next week. Southeast dropped to 2-5 and 1-2 while turning the ball over six times in the second half.
Rolesville, meanwhile, rushed for 153 yards and threw for 214, including an 81-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carnaji Andrews to E.J. Hicks on the Rams’ first possession of the game. The lead grew throughout the evening.
Turning point
Rolesville led 12-0 early in the second quarter when the Bulldogs faced a fourth and six at their own 45 yard line. Southeast went for the first down, but the Rams defense stopped the pass play for a 2-yard loss.
They said it
“We’re 2-0 in the conference, but we’ve still got a lot of things to correct and get better at,” Rolesville coach Jermaine Evans said. “We’re winning because they’re working hard and rising to the occasion. Like tonight, we’re not 30 points better than Southeast, but we played that way.”
Three who mattered
Carnaji Andrews, Rolesville: The junior quarterback continues to make plays for the Rams as he gains experience. He ran for 31 yards and passed for 205.
Colby Cooper, Rolesville: He just looked quicker than any Southeast defender on the wet field, picking up 118 yards on five receptions.
The Rolesville defense: Defensive end Jaylen Davis, linebacker Noah Jenkins and linebacker Alec Payne pressured N.C. State-bound quarterback Dylan Parham.
By the numbers
30: Seconds left in the game when Southeast got its only score, a 6-yard run by Jeffery Onyegbule, who was the Bulldogs’ workhorse. He rushed for 134 yards in the game, including 108 in the second half.
25: Yards Rolesville linebacker Noah Jenkins returned a fumble for a touchdown that put his team ahead 36-0.
