West Johnston slides past East Wake football on last-second field goal

Timare Robinson got the snap down and Christian Torres kicked the ball through the uprights from 25 yards out as time expired to give West Johnston a come-from-behind 29-26 win against East Wake on Thursday night.

The win, the Wildcats’ first in their past five tries against the Warriors, moved West Johnston to 3-4 but more importantly 2-1 in the Greater Neuse River Conference.

West Johnston stopped East Wake on third down deep in its own territory late in the fourth quarter and a botched snap on the ensuing punt set up the Wildcats in great field position.

Turning Point

On fourth-and-10 on the East Wake 26, down seven points and with less than five minutes left, West Johnston quarterback Andre Wilson kept his team alive when he found Justin Ferrell for a 14-yard completion. Two plays later, Wilson kept the ball on the zone read and scored. The Wildcats tied the game 26-26 with Torres’ extra-point kick.

Three who mattered

Tony Mack, West Johnston: The junior running back did some damage on the ground to help the offense move the ball in wet playing conditions. He showed his power and vision on a pair of first-half touchdown runs up the middle and led the Wildcats with 137 yards rushing.

Andre Wilson, West Johnston: The Wildcats’ quarterback eliminated the big mistake on a night with wet and slippery conditions. He threw for 82 yards and ran for 55 more to help West Johnston rally late for the win.

Tripp Harrington, East Wake: Harrington rushed for 88 yards to go with his 118 yards through the air on 8-of-11 passing. Harrington’s 36-yard completion to Deandre Holmes in the beginning of the fourth quarter was followed by Engles’ second touchdown of the night one play later to give the Warriors the 26-19 lead.
