Prep notebook: Lawrence, Brown and Hillside duo named to Shrine Bowl
Wake Forest’s Dexter Lawrence, Southern Durham’s Jordon Brown and Hillside teammates Abdul Adams and Najee Reams were named to the N.C.-S.C. Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas on Tuesday.
The Shrine Bowl features the best players in each state and will be played Dec. 19 at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.
Cross country washes out: Last weekend was supposed to be a big one for high school cross country, but the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary and Wendy’s Invitational at McAlpine Park in Charlotte were canceled due to heavy rainfall.
However, there have been many highlights of cross country season thus far.
▪ The Hagan-Stone Classic in Kernersville went on despite the rainfall on Saturday. Cary Academy’s girls, led by winner Sarah Bodmer (19:38.12, first), Emily Lane (20:36.22, fourth) and Athina Zodl (21:10.08, eighth) won the event.
In a close contest, the Chargers boys (67 points) were one point behind runner-up Northern Guilford and two points behind West Springfield (Va.). Union Pines, led by fifth-place Reagan Fedowitz (17:18.82) and ninth-place Ben Verchick (17:34.85), was fourth.
▪ On Sept. 26, South Johnston junior Jacob Gonzalez (15:46.67) claimed his second big win of the year, taking the Bo Run in Greenville. Smithfield-Selma freshman Drew Topoly finished eighth in the invitational race, running an 18:17.35.
▪ On Sept. 19, Broughton’s boys were second in the Adidas Race championship race (to a team from Marietta, Ga.) and Green Hope fifth. Connor Lane from Cardinal Gibbons won in 14:59 and Jeremy Brown finished second in 15:08.
Chapel Hill’s girls finished second to Riverside (S.C.) with Leesville third and Gibbons fourth.
▪ Leesville Road’s Nevada Moreno won the Adidas Race in 17:44 one week after winning Friday Night Lights in Kernersville.
Boys lacrosse conferences: The NCHSAA’s boys lacrosse conferences have changed for next year with the arrival of three new Triangle programs – Apex Friendship, Wake Forest and Rolesville.
Friendship will join “Conference 3,” which consists of eight other Southwest Wake Athletic Conference teams plus Southern Pines’ Pinecrest High. Wake Forest and Rolesville are joining Cap-8 Conference teams and Garner in “Conference 4.”
Both leagues will have 10 teams each and those teams will likely play another just once. Leagues can opt to end the season in an eight-team conference tournament.
Cardinal Gibbons joins its PAC-6 foes in “Conference 5,” where only Person and Hillside do not field teams, while Carrboro and Roxboro Community – the only Triangle 2A and 1A with lacrosse – join teams from the Big 8 3A in “Conference 6.”
The NCHSAA gives numerical numbers to each conference because so few teams field the sport that combination conferences are often needed.
The girls lacrosse conferences have not been finalized, but Rolesville, Apex Friendship and Southern Vance have applied to play this season. Cary, which has tried to field a team in the last two seasons, was not listed in the latest proposal.
