Sanderson gets second straight Cap-8 football win, beats Broughton
After starting the season 2-5 and losing two games by one point, Sanderson proved their late game struggles were a thing of the past Friday, picking up their second consecutive CAP 8 win by surviving a resilient Broughton squad 28-19.
“We’ve talked about finishing all week,” Sanderson coach Ben Kolstad said.
The homecoming victory didn’t come easy for the Spartans, who swapped leads with the Capitals five times.
Turning point
Sanderson punter Michael Kinney pinned Broughton deep in their own territory late in the third quarter with a 31-yard boot. Two plays later, Alim McNeil had a short field to work with after scooping up a Broughton fumble, rumbling six yards into the endzone to give Sanderson a crucial lead.
They said it
“Most weeks we’ve played two opponents: the opponent on our schedule and Broughton High School,” Broughton coach Billy Lane said.
Three who mattered
Devone Jackson, Broughton: Jackson amassed 157 yards on only 11 touches.
Sam Vines, Sanderson: Vines picked up each of the Spartans’ final two offensive scores and earned 110 yards rushing on only seven carries.
Jesse Williams, Sanderson: The defensive end racked up 10 tackles (two for loss).
By the numbers
13.7: Yards per carry from the Sanderson offense when they ran from the wishbone formation featuring Vines and McNeil. The duo combined for 137 yards.
13.1: Yards per play for Broughton when Jackson touched the ball.
3.3: Broughton yards per play without Jackson carrying or catching the ball.
1,050: Yards rushing by Sanderson running back Jordan Logan this season. Logan clipped the 1,000-yard mark early in the third quarter.
