Cleveland Rams produce on offense, rout South Johnston football
There’s offensive production and then there’s what Cleveland did Friday night against rival South Johnston.
The 12th-ranked Rams scored touchdowns on nine of 10 offensive possessions at one point and rolled to a 63-28 victory in a game that matched two of the three teams that tied for the Two Rivers 3A Conference championship last season.
The 63 points topped the 62 Cleveland put on the board in the two teams’ first meeting in 2011 and moved the Rams to 5-0 all-time against the ninth-ranked Trojans.
Cleveland (5-3 overall, 2-0 conference) went three-and-out on its first possession and then preceded to score TDs on its next two possessions, miss a field goal on their fourth possession, then reel off seven consecutive touchdown drives against the Trojans (6-2, 1-1).
They Said It
“I’ve played varsity for three years now and the non-conference schedule gets tougher every year,” said senior center Zach Jacobs.
Three Who Mattered
Caiden Norman, Cleveland: This was supposed to be the year the Rams finally had a question mark at quarterback. Thanks to this junior, there’s been little to question about the Ram offense. He had a hand in four Cleveland TDs, completed 19-of-25 passes and ran for a team-high 134 yards.
Landen Lockamy, South Johnston: When the Trojans had their scoring spurt in the second quarter, Lockamy was all over it. He threw a 60-yard TD pass to Fabian McDonald and ran for a 10-yard TD.
Corey Brown, Cleveland: He didn’t have the typical big rushing numbers, but he still contributed three touchdowns and showed he’s a receiving threat teams will have to prepare for with four catches for 69 yards.
By the Numbers
628: Offensive yards for the Rams on the night.
227: Lockamy’s yards from scrimmage. He was 11-of-16 for 175 yards and ran for 62 yards for South Johnston.
81: Rushing yards by Cleveland’s Joseph James.
Looking Ahead
Two dates loom when it comes to the Rams and Trojans. Their dates with 7-1 Corinth Holders, which was a tri-champion in the league last season. South hosts Corinth Holders on Oct. 30; Corinth Holders hosts Cleveland on Nov. 6
