Prep roundup: Girls’ golf regionals, TISAC tournament, tennis first-round matches

Cardinal Gibbons, Sanderson, Green Hope, Clayton, Broughton and two-time defending state champ Panther Creek were among the first-round winners in the N.C. High School Athletic Association girls’ tennis playoffs Tuesday.

The next round of the 4A playoffs will be next Tuesday. Green Hope (beat Fayetteville’s Jack Britt 9-0) will visit New Bern (defeated West Johnston 9-0) and East Chapel Hill (won 6-0 at Wilmington’s Laney) will be at Broughton (won 8-1 at Southern Pines’ Pinecrest).

On the other side of the bracket, Cardinal Gibbons (22-1), which beat Fayetteville’s Cape Fear 9-0, will visit Sanderson (17-0), which defeated Apex 9-0. Clayton (18-0) and Panther Creek (17-0) will have a coin flip for who hosts after the Comets dispatched Lumberton 7-2 and Panther Creek downed Riverside 6-0.

Also advancing was Carrboro (5-0 over Fairmont) in 2A and Union Pines (9-0 in Cedar Ridge) in 3A.

TISAC girls’ golf: North Raleigh Christian (269) claimed the Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference’s girls’ golf tournament, edging Ravenscroft (274), Durham Academy (282) and Cary Academy (283).

North Raleigh Christian’s Channing Hensley was the medalist, and Durham Academy’s Ashley Kim won the player of the year honors. Ravenscroft’s Natalie Warren, Camryn Fletcher, Lotte Fox and Carson Jenkins were named all-conference along with Durham Academy’s Kim and Madi Dunk and North Raleigh Christian’s Hensley, Rachel Weyne and Emily Brubaker.

3A girls’ golf regionals: Lee County’s two-time state champion Muk Shoomee won the 3A East girls’ golf regional Monday with a sizzling 71. The Yellow Jackets (252) were second to Fayetteville Terry Sanford (243) and will advance to next week’s state tournament along with third-place Union Pines (270).

South Johnston’s Syndy Wheeless (81, third) and Corinth Holders’ Peyton LaBonte (83, tie for fifth) are also going to the state tournament along with fellow individual qualifiers like Smithfield-Selma’s Parker Watson, Triton’s Carmen Tucker and Brooke Blackmon and Southern Lee’s Emma Langston.

Lee County’s team will be Shoomee, Morgan McRae and Allison Von Canon. Union Pines will have Abby Parsons, Dametrah Lewis and Hanna Duncan.

In the 3A Central regional, Chapel Hill’s Gina Kim fired a 71 to finish runner-up. She will head to states along with Northwood’s Logan McClamroch and Orange’s Amanda Hill.

1A/2A girls’ golf: Franklin Academy (286) finished four strokes behind Croatan for the 1A/2A East golf regional Monday, qualifying the Patriots (Sara Allen, Erin Walsh and Emma Bowers) for next week’s state tournament. Carrboro’s Meghan McPeak (87) was four strokes behind medalist Lindsey Burton of Rosewood.

East Wake Academy’s Caitlyn Seastrunk, River Mill Academy’s Mackensie Vincent, South Granville’s Cameron and Claire Patrick, Voyager Academy’s Peyton Henderson and N.C. Science and Math’s Jennifer Yang and Claudia Sisk also qualified as individuals.

North Johnston, which was fifth in the regional, will qualify as a team because it had three golfers qualify individually – Heather Crocker, Brilyn Parker and Caroline Baker.
