Wakefield soccer upsets conference leader Broughton
Wakefield soccer got the game-winning goal of its 3-2 victory over Cap-8 Conference leader Broughton from Sheyan Montezari.
He scored in dramatic fashion inside the 72nd minute for the Wolverines (6-9-2, 5-6-1 Cap-8).
Turning point
In the 14th minute, Broughton defender Hyu A was ejected when he received a red card. The Caps (12-6-1, 8-3-1) would have to play the remainder of the game with 10 players. With the man advantage, the Wolverines were able to take control in the box and capitalized on two penalty kicks to keep the Capitals from pulling away.
“It definitely helps having a man advantage,” Wakefield coach C.J. Komons said. “Just fighting, our mentality the last week and a half has been we created a hole, we have to get out of it. We have to climb out of it, we have to fight out of it and they (Wakefield) did it tonight.”
They said it
Komons on his player’s game-winning goal. Laughing, he said: “He better beat that player and put it in the back of the net.”
Montezari himself added, “I cut in from the right, and Edwin (Umanzor) played me the ball and I just had to make a quick turn with the defenders on me, and I had to finish for the team. I wasn’t nervous, I knew I was going to score.”
Three who mattered
Esteban Salinas Noyola, Broughton: The junior defender made accurate and powerful throw-ins all night long. His passes consistently put his teammates in scoring position, putting pressure on the Wakefield defenders.
Sheyan Montezari, Wakefield: The senior saved his best for last. After receiving a pass around midfield, and a couple of fancy moves, Montezari was able to streak down the left hash mark, beating two defenders, to score the game-winning goal for the Wolverines.
Clay Oxford, Wakefield: The goalie only had two saves, but his last save late in the game helped preserve the Wolverines’ lead.
By the numbers

0: The Wakefield defense was able to hold Broughton’s talented striker Elvis Wiredu to no goals and no shots on goal.
