Prep roundup: Raleigh Charter sweeps NCAC cross country titles

Raleigh Charter won the boys and girls competitions at the North Central Atheltic 1A cross country conference championships on Thursday at Wendell Park. The Raleigh Charter girls clipped Franklin Academy 42-59 while the boys won 40-54 against runner-up Research Triangle.

In both races, last year’s NCAC champ finished second to a younger runner.

Raleigh Charter freshman Gillian Scott (20:06) finished ahead of Franklin Academy senior Hannah Zenker and Voyager Academy junior Luke Bennett (16:16) was 11 seconds faster than Research Triangle senior Madison Daniel.

Other cross country champs: Union Pines swept Cape Fear Valley 3A titles as Reagan Fedowitz (16:40.27) won the boys’ race.

In the Northern Carolina 2A, Durham School of Arts won the girls’ competition and N.C. Science & Math won the boys’ race. DSA’s Thomas Little (16:19.23) and NCSSM’s Frances Massey (19:27.89) won individual titles.

Chatham Central claimed the Central Tar Heel 1A boys’ title while the Northern Nash girls and Rocky Mount boys claimed Big East 3A titles.

Stevens returns to Chapel Hill: Matt Stevens, a Chapel Hill alumnus who played for the New England Patriots in their 2001 Super Bowl win, presented his NFL Golden Football to school officials during halftime of Friday’s football game with Orange.

As part of its commemoration of the 50th Super Bowl, the NFL is sending a gold football to every high school in the world that’s produced a player or coach who’s appeared in a Super Bowl. The NFL estimates that over 3,000 players have played in the Super Bowl, along with 52 coaches. The league will invite some of those 3,000 players to personally deliver the gold football to their individual high school.

Northern Durham received a golden football from former Denver Bronco Steve Wilson on Wednesday.

Volleyball tournaments: Lee County (17-4) avenged two regular season losses to Fayetteville Terry Sanford with a 3-1 win Wednesday in the Cape Fear Valley Conference volleyball tournament. South Granville (24-3) beat Bunn for a third time this year to claim the Northern Carolina 2A.

The state playoffs begin Saturday. For a full bracket and scores as they are reported, go to nando.com/preps and nando.com/prepsnow.

In boys soccer, which also begins Saturday, Ravenscroft has the No. 2 seed in 3A. Defending 2A champ St. David’s is a 7-seed.
