Northwood football shocks Southern Durham, stops conversion attempt with no time left
Northwood stopped Southern Durham on a two-point conversion attempt with no time left on the clock to pull off an upset over the Spartans 28-26 in a Big 8 3A Conference thriller Friday night. The victory puts Northwood, Southern and Orange in a three-way tie for first place.
With the game tied at 14 in the fourth quarter, Chargers safety Cameron Goins intercepted Southern quarterback Jalen Green and romped 25 yards for a touchdown with 4:30 left.
The Spartans came right back with a four-play 90-yard drive that running back Jordon Brown finished from 39 yards out. But Southern’s two-point conversion attempt failed with an incomplete pass.
Northwood extended its lead 28-20 with 1:28 left on running back Montel Goods’ 55-yard scamper that broke several tackles.
But Southern wasn’t done. Starting from their own 35, the Spartans converted two fourth-down possessions en route to Greene hitting Jajuan Whitted for 10 yards with no time left. But Greene overthrew his receiver on the conversion to give the Chargers the win.
Turning point
After recovering the onside kick with 3:23 left and down by one, Northwood defense sacked Greene on 4th-and-10, setting up Goods’ touchdown run.
They said it
“There was no doubt – I knew we were going to win,” Northwood coach Brian Harrington said. “I could see it in their eyes (as they lined up against Southern’s two-point conversion attempt.)
