Prep roundup: Panther Creek girls tennis advances six players from Mideast regional
Panther Creek advanced all six of its players to next week’s N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A individual girls tennis state championships. At the Mideast regional on Saturday, three-time defending doubles state champions Sammi Smith and Jordan Strickland won their fourth straight regional.
The Catamounts also advanced the doubles team of Aishani Tingare and Melody Zhang as well as singles players Orla LaBiche and Amanda Cyr.
Wakefield’s two-time defending 4A singles champ Susanne Boyden and Green Hope’s Karena Zhang are also heading to states, as are Sanderson’s doubles teams of Sibel Tanik and Sofia Anthony and Dylan Cannon and Anna Scott Holshouser.
The 4A Midwest regional welcomed newcomer Cardinal Gibbons this year, and the Crusaders will advance two doubles teams to the state tournament.
Lizzie Galush and Jenna Knors won the regional 6-3, 6-0 over a pair from Greensboro’s Page High. Caroline Igo and Summer Jacobs won their third-place match.
In singles, East Chapel Hill’s Savannah Bright defeated Riverside’s Sophie Bischoff 6-0, 6-2 for the third seed, but both will advance to the state tournament.
Volleyball playoffs
4A East: There were few surprises in the NCHSAA 4A East bracket on Saturday. The lower seed won just three games out of 16 – Green Hope over Jordan, Person against West Johnston 3-0 and Heritage at Fayetteville’s Cape Fear High were all 3-0 wins.
Tuesday’s second-round matches are: 16-Apex at 1-Broughton; 9-Leesville Road at 8-D.H. Conley; 13-East Wake at 4-Jack Britt; 12-Overhills at 5-Cardinal Gibbons; 18-Heritage at 2-J.H. Rose; 26-Person at 10-Fuquay-Varina; 14-New Bern at 3-Hoggard; 22-Green Hope at 6-Panther Creek.
3A: Cedar Ridge (21-3), the No. 1 overall seed, swept Swansboro 3-0 Saturday and will host Eastern Alamance on Tuesday in the second round.
Orange picked up a 3-1 win at Morehead and will visit Northern Guilford on Tuesday.
Other second round matches are West Carteret at Lee County, Cleveland at Hunt, Triton at Terry Sanford and Southwestern Randolph (a 3-0 winner against South Johnston) at Corinth Holders. Chapel Hill fell 3-2 to Gray’s Creek.
2A: No. 1 seed Carrboro rolled with a 3-0 win against West Bladen and will host Midway on Tuesday
1A: Defending 1A state champion Princeton dispatched Research Triangle 3-0 and will host Granville Central in Tuesday’s second round. Louisburg will host Rosewood and Franklin Academy will visit East Carteret, while Roxboro Community, the No. 1 seed, will host Gates County.
