Prep roundup: Cardinal Gibbons, Panther Creek girls tennis end undefeated seasons
The N.C. High School Athletic Association girls’ tennis playoffs are without two undefeated 4A teams after Thursday’s second round.
Cardinal Gibbons (23-1) ended Sanderson’s 17-1 season 6-3 while Panther Creek (17-0) made quick work of Clayton (18-1) 6-0 and will host Gibbons on Monday.
On the other end of the 4A East bracket, Green Hope (19-2) will host the winner of East Chapel Hill at Broughton, which was not available at press time.
3A: Union Pines (13-1) swept Topsail 9-0 and will travel to Rocky Mount (14-0) on Monday.
2A: Carrboro (14-2) swept Kill Devil Hills’ First Flight 6-0 while N.C. Science and Math (10-0) blanked Wilson’s Beddingfield 5-0.
NCHSAA volleyball
4A: Defending state champion J.H. Rose, the No. 2 seed, dispatched No. 10 Fuquay-Varina 3-0 and will host No. 14 New Bern, a 3-1 victor at No. 6 Panther Creek. Saturday’s top showdown will be No. 5 Cardinal Gibbons (17-3) at No. 1 Broughton (22-0), which beat Leesville Road 3-0.
3A: No. 1 Cedar Ridge (23-3) swept No. 8 Topsail and will host No. 13 Lee County (20-4), a 3-0 victor over 21st-seeded Orange, on Saturday. No. 19 Triton (18-8) rallied by No. 11 Cleveland 3-2 and will travel to No. 2 Asheboro.
2A: A 3-0 win by No. 1 Carrboro (26-2) against No. 8 Croatan sets up a meeting with No. 12 Eastern Randolph. No. 2 South Granville (27-3) won 3-1 against No. 10 First Flight and will host No. 3 North Lenoir.
1A: Top-seeded Roxboro Community (25-1) clipped No. 9 Perquimans and will host No. 4 Louisbug (24-1), a 3-0 winner against No. 5 Williamston Riverside. No. 3 Princeton (25-1) swept No. 6 Wallace-Rose Hill and will host No. 15 Voyager Academy (22-4), a 3-2 winner against Franklin Academy.
NCISAA semifinals
Boys’ soccer: Lee Christian (18-2), an 8-seed, will play No. 4 Oakwood School at 4 p.m. Friday at Wilson’s Greenfield School in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association semifinals.
Host North Raleigh Christian Knights (12-5-2) are the 3A 5-seed and will play nationally-ranked Wesleyan Christian Academy at 4 p.m. Friday. Ravenscroft (15-2-2) will play Charlotte Country Day at 6:30 p.m.
Field hockey: Host Durham Academy (11-6), the 4-seed, will take the field at 1:30 p.m. against Charlotte Country Day.
Girls’ tennis: In 1A, No. 1 St. David’s (12-3) plays Gaston Day at 1 p.m. at Barton College. In 3A, No. 3 Cary Academy (18-6) plays Charlotte Latin at 1 p.m. and No. 4 Durham Academy (15-5) plays Charlotte Country Day at 10 a.m. at Charlotte’s Providence Day.
Volleyball: Volleyball plays the quarterfinals and semifinals on Friday. Still alive are: Cape Fear Christian (1A No. 8, 13-5 overall), Cresset Christian (1A No. 3, 22-6), Kerr-Vance Academy (1A No. 7, 17-8), Cary Christian (2A No. 9, 17-5), North Raleigh Christian (3A No. 1, 25-2) and Ravenscroft (3A No. 6, 18-10).
NCHSAA boys’ soccer
Leesville Road won four games in five consecutive school nights to win its first Cap-8 boys soccer title since 2010.
The NCHSAA boys soccer playoffs begin next week. The brackets will be released Monday.
Other conference champs include: Apex (Southwest Wake 4A), Cardinal Gibbons (PAC-6 4A) Chapel Hill (Big 8 3A), Lee County (Cape Fear Valley 3A), Cleveland (Two Rivers 3A), N.C. Science and Math (Northern Carolina 2A) and Franklin Academy (North Central 1A).
