Broughton football downs Enloe for first win of season
Broughton football picked up its first win of the season against Enloe Friday night.
Capitals coach Billy Lane said the 34-6 victory meant the most to Broughton’s 15 seniors.
“These seniors had deserved a feeling like this,” he said. “These guys have worked hard and we’ve been so dang close, not just a few games this year, but last year. We just haven’t quite been able to get over the hump, but these kids have hung in there and they deserve this feeling tonight.”
The Capitals (1-9, 1-5 Cap-8) compensated for the first scoring opportunity they missed – a close-range field goal after driving 70 yards on the opening possession, and struck early to go ahead. Junior quarterback Cliff Chavis scored from 19 yards away after Broughton dominated possession in the first quarter.
Broughton didn’t score a touchdown fewer than 19 yards in the victory, and senior Stephen McGowan led the game with 147 rushing yards on nine attempts.
“We’re a run-based offense,” Lane said. “So when a team comes up to stop the run, some of those shots are there. We’ve had those shots this year, and we just hadn’t been able to cash them in. It’s a great feeling to see that come out.”
Turning point
Broughton overcame a kickoff return for a touchdown that would have been its third score. Enloe (0-10, 0-6) pulled its deficit to 14-6 behind an Antavius Marrow 15-yard score in the second quarter. Broughton senior Stephen McGowan broke free on the kickoff, but with a penalty put his Caps at the Enloe 38 instead.
With just two snaps, the Capitals scored with junior Devone Jackson hauling in the 37-yard touchdown.
“They were well prepared,” Enloe coach David Green said. “They came out and jumped on us. We didn’t come out and get after it the same way they did.”
Three who mattered
Antavius Marrow, Enloe: The senior running back had carried the load all season, and on Friday, he was involved in most of the Eagles’ offensive plays. He led the Eagles with 120 rushing yards on 24 carries. When their starting quarterback Keshawn Adams came out of the game to an ankle injury in just the second quarter, Marrow had even more weight to shoulder. He said he just plays with “110 every play. No plays off.”
Devone Jackson, Broughton: The junior scored twice in the win, including a 19-yard touchdown with 1 minute and 7 seconds showing to provide the final margin.
Cliff Chavis, Broughton: He rotated at quarterback with senior Owen Wilkinson. Working with a new center this week, both quarterbacks breezed through the challenge. After fumbling the snap in the third quarter, Chavis pushed out an 18-yard run and then found freshman Ben Lee for a 36-yard touchdown pass to convert third-and-27. He finished with 55 passing yards on a 4-of-8 night, while Wilkinson was 4-of-6 for 52 yards.
By the numbers
3: Consecutive first downs Enloe’s Adams rushed for in the opening period.
64: Seconds Enloe’s first possession lasted.
6: Combined fumbles for the teams. Enloe recovered two, one in the first quarter and one in the third.
