Defense was the name of the game for Holly Springs on Friday.

The Golden Hawks could not find their rhythm offensively in a 27-10 victory at Cary, so they had to rely on their defense in order to keep the early lead they built in the first quarter.

On the third play from scrimmage, the Imps (2-8, 1-5 Southwest Wake 4A) went for the option and mishandled the pitch. Holly Springs’ Dawson Wright scooped up the fumble and returned it 25 yards for the touchdown.

“It was a defensive battle. They played hard tonight. It was probably played one of their best games of the season,” Holly Springs coach Robert Furth stated. “But our defense stood tall and our offense came through when they needed to.”

Holly Springs (7-4, 5-2) found some success on the offensive side of the ball when Davis Ferguson completed three straight passes (15 yards, 14 yards, 23 yards) early in the third period. Those passes set up a 2-yard TD run from Jonathan Prince and the Golden Hawks took the 20-10 lead.

Cary had trouble moving the ball as well. Penalty flags plagued the Imps the whole night and it did not help that their home field was slippery.

The Imps recovered a fumble on their own 36-yard line with 5:37 left in the third quarter but could not take advantage of the opportunity.

They forced Holly Springs to punt on the next drive, but Yavel Morris picked off a Hicks pass and took it to the end zone to extend the lead to 17.

Keeyon Hicks led the Imps in passing yards (168) and rushing yards (35) for the game. His lone TD pass came right before the half when he found defensive lineman Roderick Perry from 5 yards out.

The Imps will prepare for their last game of the season against Fuquay-Varina next week while the Golden Hawks get to enjoy a bye week.

“We’re excited. We get an off week after eleven straight weeks so we’ll try to get healthy and get ready for the playoffs,” Furth said.
