XC regional roundup: Cardinal Gibbons girls win; boys take second place in 4A Midwest
Cross country runners from across the state did their best to qualify for next weekend’s N.C. High School Athletic Association state championships on Saturday, as teams ran regional races from across the state.
In the 4A Midwest, Cardinal Gibbons took home the girls’ title while the boys were second to Winston-Salem’s Mount Tabor.
4A Midwest

"I'm very happy and proud of our girls,'' said Corinth Holders coach Joe Johnston. "We start running the Saturday after school gets out for the summer. You can't do that unless you are committed and want to work hard. It all starts there.''

2A Mideast

"I'm really excited," Hickey said. "It wasn't really expected. I thought it was going to be harder to be out there and be out in front, but, you know, it feels good. I'm happy about it and really excited for states."

"We got fifth in both, and we came so close," Franklinton coach Clennie Wilkins said. "It was tough, but exciting. They've worked really hard. For the individuals, it's an awesome experience. I'm proud of all of them."
