Citing a lack of players available for its Mid-State 2A Conference contest Friday, Carrboro will forfeit its football game with Reidsville, school officials have announced.

The forfeit is the second this year for Carrboro, which likewise foreits a game Oct. 16 against Bartlett Yancey.

The automatic loss of the team’s final game on its schedule means Carrboro will finish the season 0-11 overall, 0-5 in Mid-State games. That makes for the first winless season for Carrboro, since 2008, the second year the Jaguars fielded a team.

This year’s Carrboro team included players who were on the team in 2012, when the Jaguars won 15 straight games and appeared in the NCHSAA state 2A championship game.

But player numbers have declined since then, leaving Carrboro with less than 20 heathy players available for most of the its last five games.

“Due to a lack of participation numbers/illness, Carrboro High School has cancelled the November 6 home football game vs. Reidsville,” Carrboro Athletics Director April Ross said in an email sent Thursday afternoon. “The decision was based on the safety and welfare of our athletes.”
