N&O roundup: Hillside, Wake Forest, Southern Durham wrap up conference titles

Venerable Bunn football coach David Howle won his 200th game on Friday – and saw his team clinch the outright championship in the Northern Carolina 2A with a 69-32 win against Warren County.

Bunn (9-2, 5-0), which will carry an eight-game winning streak into the playoffs, piled up 56 points in the first half alone, including interception returns for touchdowns by Tevin Perry (35 yards) and Victor Dunston (100 yards).

Perry also collected 175 rushing yards to go with four more scores. Warren County (3-8, 1-4) took an early 6-0 lead on a 63-yard touchdown run from Darius Southerland, but the Wildcats would move ahead for good on Davonte Caldwell's 1-yard plunge just 21 ticks into the second quarter.

East Wake 60, Harnett Central 27: The Warriors (7-4, 5-2 Greater Neuse 4A) forced three interceptions, two for touchdowns, and two fumbles in throttling the Trojans (1-10, 0-7). Tripp Harrington threw for 253 yards and four scores, and ran for another touchdown.

Franklinton 42, Southern Vance 0: The Red Rams (5-6, 2-3 Northern Carolina 2A) shut out the Raiders (2-9, 0-5).

Fuquay-Varina 28, Cary 21: Despite falling into a 14-0 hole to open the night, Cary fought back to nearly upset No. 3 Fuquay-Varina (9-1, 5-1 Southwest Wake 4A). Isaiah Gibbons had 157 yards rushing for the Imps (2-8, 1-6).

Granville Central 46, Northwest Halifax 0: The Panthers (8-3, 5-0 Tar-Roanoke 1A) won their first league title by stomping the Vikings (0-11, 0-5).

Green Hope 35, Athens Drive 12: The Falcons (7-4, 4-3 Southwest Wake 4A) closed out Athens Drive’s Williams Stadium as Tucker Burkinshaw threw two touchdowns and ran for another. Jaguars (0-11, 0-7) quarterback Jack Hunt tossed two touchdown passes in the final home game.

Heritage 35, Broughton 6: Zach Gemmell caught two touchdown passes to lead the Huskies (5-6, 3-4 Cap-8 4A) to a 35-6 win against the Capitals (1-10, 1-6). Gemmell caught touchdown passes of 58 and 76 yards, and tailback Isaac Burton scored on a 94-yard run to help the Huskies snap a three-game losing streak.

Hillside 41, Person 0: The Hornets (8-2, 6-0) won yet another PAC-6 4A title by walloping the Rockets (6-5, 3-3).

Leesville Road 27, Wakefield 18: Needing a win to have a chance at sneaking into the playoffs, the Pride (5-6, 4-3 Cap-8 4A) stunned The N&O’s No. 4 Wakefield (8-3, 5-2).

Northern Vance 26, Cedar Ridge 17: The Vikings (5-6, 2-4) might be headed to the state playoffs for the first time since 2008 thanks to 257 yards rushing by quarterback Kris Haywood (four touchdowns). Northern Vance scored 19 unanswered to rally past the Red Wolves (4-7, 2-4).

Princeton 42, Rosewood 41: In the night’s biggest upset, the Bulldogs (4-6, 4-2 Carolina 1A) stunned the rival Eagles (7-4, 4-2) and stole an automatic playoff spot.

Riverside 14, East Chapel Hill 0: The Pirates (4-7, 1-5 after picking up a nonconference forfeit win from Pinecrest) stayed out of the PAC-6 4A cellar by shutting out the Wildcats (1-10, 0-6).

Roanoke Rapids 34, South Granville 16: The Yellow Jackets (8-3, 4-1) finish one spot higher than the Vikings (4-7, 3-2) in the Northern Carolina 2A.

South Johnston 49, Smithfield-Selma 8: Landen Lockamy threw for three touchdowns and Kavante Johnson rushed for 135 yards and two scores to lead South Johnston (7-4, 2-3 Two Rivers 3A) to a convincing victory over rival Smithfield-Selma (0-11, 0-5).

Southeast Raleigh 48, Clayton 27: Lee Holmes rushed for four touchdowns, three of them in the first quarter, as Southeast (4-7, 3-4 Greater Neuse 4A) pulled away from Clayton (3-8, 2-5). Holmes had 27 carries and 174 yards to go along with his four scores. N.C. State recruit Dylan Parham threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 35 yards and a score and caught a pass for 20 yards.

Clayton’s Landen Leiser completed 13 of his 32 passes for 228 yards and two TDs.

Southern Lee 21, Lee County 20: In overtime, Southern Lee (6-5, 2-4 Cape Fear Valley 3A) blocked a Yellow Jackets (8-3, 3-3) extra point to win the Brick City Bowl in thrilling fashion. The Cavaliers won twice on the day, as news of Pinecrest High’s 10 forfeits was announced earlier in the evening.

Triton 28, Western Harnett 8: To South Johnston’s chagrin, the Hawks (4-7, 3-2 Two Rivers 3A) got the league’s final playoff spot after beating the Eagles (2-8, 1-4).

Wake Forest 48, Enloe 0: The Cougars (11-0, 7-0 Cap-8 4A) ran out to a commanding 35-0 lead at halftime against the Eagles (0-11, 0-7) to end the season undefeated and conference champions.

Weldon 62, Louisburg 14: Louisburg (1-10 overall, 1-4 Tar-Roanoke 1A) led 7-6 after Terry Allen escaped for a 77-yard touchdown run in the first period, but Weldon (5-5, 4-1) responded with 50 unanswered points before halftime to clinch second place in the league.

NCISAA playoffs

St. David’s 64, Cary Christian 24: Nine carries, 203 yards and four touchdowns from Melvin Briggs led the No. 1 Warriors (11-0) past the Knights (3-8) in the 8-man 2A semifinals. St. David’s will play at Arendell Parrott at 6 p.m. in next week’s state championship in Kinston.

Wake Christian 42, Village Christian 0: The Bulldogs (8-3), No. 2 in the DIII 11-man bracket, trounced the Knights (4-6) and will host No. 6 Concord First Assembly next week.
