Green Hope’s gymnastics team won third straight Southwest Wake Athletic Conference title but was upset in its quest for a state championship. The Falcons fell by 0.35 points to Clayton, stopping a Falcons streak of three straight state championships.

Green Hope reurns sophomore Gretchen Mackie and junior Sabriyya Rouse, the SWAC all-around runner-up. Mackie was fourth.

Rouse won the vault, bars and beam at the state championships, which are not affiliated with the N.C. High School Athletic Association as the NCHSAA does not have gymnastics as a sanctioned sport.

Panther Creek, which won the small teams state championship, was second in the SWAC and returns junior Maria Esposto, who won the SWAC all-around title with a combined score of 38.75. Esposto, who won the state’s small schools all-around championship as a freshman in 2014, won the SWAC floor routine (9.9) and the beam (9.75).

Fuquay-Varina was third in the SWAC and returns most of its team.

Middle Creek was runner-up in the small teams title and tied Apex for fourth in the SWAC. Middle Creek senior Elizabeth Farin was third in the SWAC in the all-around.

Holly Springs was third in the small teams title behind Panther Creek and Middle Creek.

Athens Drive returns Sam Orebaugh, who won the all-around in the all-stars portion of the large team championships.
