This year’s edition of The News & Observer’s All-Metro cross country team may go down as the strongest ever.

Area athletes won the 4A boys, 4A girls, 2A boys and 2A girls titles in the N.C. High School Athletic Association championships as well as the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 3A boys and 3A girls championships.

In the 4A meet, Wake County alone was responsible for eight of the top 10 girls and seven of the top 12 boys.

Six area schools won team championships: Cary Academy (NCISAA 3A boys and girls), Cardinal Gibbons (4A girls), Chapel Hill (3A girls), Broughton (4A boys), Cary Christian (NCISAA 2A boys) and N.C. School of Science and Math (2A boys).

Broughton’s Jeremy Brown, a two-time state 4A champion and North Carolina recruit, is a four-time All-Metro pick. So too is Cardinal Gibbons senior Sophie Ebihara, a Florida recruit.

Leesville Road’s Nevada Mareno and Green Hope’s Elly Henes, the past two 4A champions, are three-time selections.

Brown, Mareno, Cary Academy’s Sarah Bodmer and Coleman Mitchell, Carrboro’s Amanda Hickey and N.C. Science and Math’s Frank Kenny all won individual state championships.

Most of this year’s teams are first-year picks. All championship times for NCHSAA runners are for Kernersville’s Ivey Redmon Park while the NCISAA championships were at Charlotte’s McAlpine Creek Park.
