Still in the midst of a streak of double-double performances, Chapel Hill High School basketball player Alliyah Chaplin has earned “Performance of the Week” honors from the N.C. High School Athletics Association.

Chaplin, a 5-11 sophomore at Chapel Hill, and boys basketball player Sage Surratt of East Lincoln High School were named winners of the NCHSAA weekly awards on Thursday.

Chaplin had a double-double last week against Cardinal Gibbons High School with 21 points and 12 rebounds in a decisive 52-38 win over the Lady Crusaders in non-conference play. The sophomore Tiger also contributed 4 assists, 1 block and 1 steal in the game Jan. 13. She followed up one night later with 15 points and 11 rebounds in a losing, 59-52 effort at Big-8 co-leader Southern Durham.

Chaplin had 15 points and 10 rebounds in a 55-48 victory on Tuesday against 4A Northern Durham, marking her eighth straight double-double, coach Sherry Norris said. The Chapel Hill sophomore also made 2 steals and an assist in Tuesday’s win.

Alliyah’s sister, Ti’Mia, a 6-0 junior, also suits up for the Chapel Hill squad coached by Norris, who will be inducted this year into NCHSAA Hall of Fame’s class of 2016 and who was recently announced as the 2015 North Carolina Coach of the Year for Girls Basketball by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Surratt, a junior at East Lincoln, hit six 3-point shots in a major 91- 57 win last week over the Maiden Blue Devils, scoring a total of 50 points. He shot 100 percent from the free throw line, sinking 10 of 10 attempts, and added six assists and three steals to round out his performance against Maiden High School.

Incidentally, Surratt’s brother, Chazz, was named as a Performance of the Week athlete last year for his football prowess at East Lincoln.
