Girls basketball playoff roundup: 16 N&O teams remain

After Thursday’s second round games, only 16 teams remain in each classification of the 2016 N.C. High School Athletics Association girls’ basketball playoffs. The third round will held Saturday in most cases, but schools can agree to play Friday.

4A East

Top-seeded Hillside will face Green Hope, which defeated Wakefield Thursday, next after beating Knightdale. Holly Springs and Apex both suffered season-ending defeats. Southeast Raleigh survived a scare from Riverside and won by two points in overtime, while Heritage earned a one-point win on the road at Hoggard. Millbrook cruised to an easy 16-point win at home against New Hanover and will face East Wake, which went on the road to beat J.H. Rose.

Chapel Hill and Cleveland both suffered home defeats Tuesday. Union Pines, which beat Havelock on the road, faces Rockingham County next. Northwood is now preparing for Eastern Alamance after handling Eastern Guilford without trouble.
