Leesville Road’s Doc Redman and South Johnston’s Patrick Stephenson were a few strokes away from winning state titles last year.

Both golfers and college recruits were state runners-up at their N.C. High School Athletic Association championships.

Teams to watch

Broughton: The 4A runners-up lose four seniors who never finished worse than second in the state.

Cardinal Gibbons: Won the 3A Mideast regional and was 10th in the state.

Corinth Holders: Won the 3A East regional and tied for sixth in the state.

Northern Durham: The PAC-6 4A champs are led by UNC Greensboro recruit Michael Wicker and Virginia Tech recruits Sarah and Jessica Spicer (the girls are allowed to play because the Knights don’t have a girls’ team).

Panther Creek: The Catamounts were seventh in 4A thanks in part to Viraj Garewal (tied for 9th).

Ravenscroft: Ryan Gerald was fourth in NCISAA 3A and the Ravens were fifth overall.

St. David’s: The Warriors were second in NCISAA 2A competition and return Andrew Wilmoth and Preston Ball.
