Chapel Hill girls lacrosse edges rival East Chapel Hill

Shannon Wulff registered eight goals and an assist, while Paige Haskins added five goals and three assists and the Chapel Hill girls lacrosse team defeated crosstown rival East Chapel Hill 17-14 on Tuesday night at Culton-Peerman Stadium.

East’s Reilly Reed scored seven goals, while Lena Johnson added four.

With the score tied at 13-all, Haskins earned a key ground ball on East’s offensive end, then scored with 5 minutes, 17 seconds left to give Chapel Hill the advantage for good. With 3:50 remaining, Haskins scored an 8-meter goal after being tripped inside the arc. Wulff scored the Tigers’ final goal on an assist from Haskins with 2:57 left.

Chapel Hill (5-2, 2-1) has won five straight over the Wildcats (4-4, 2-1).

Turning point

East overcame a five-goal deficit to tie the score 12-all after a goal from Reed on an assist from Cassidy Fourtney with 14:35 remaining in the second half. Wulff responded with a goal from point-blank range on an assist from Julia Ziaee to retake the lead.

Three who mattered

Shannon Wulff, Chapel Hill: The midfielder now has 47 points on the season after a nine-point game.

Paige Haskins, Chapel Hill: Her five-goal game brings her to 28 on the season.

Olivia Rice, Chapel Hill: Goalkeeper finished with four saves.

“Our defense had a big game. Lena Johnson was killing us. We talked about doubling her. Morgan Walton and Reagan Roeber were taking her for a lot of the game.
