Carrboro’s No. 10-ranked boys’ lacrosse team traveled to Northwood on Wednesday night well aware through social media that the Chargers felt confident their improving program could challenge the Jaguars.

Carrboro’s players got the message and then they delivered their own on the field with a 20-8 victory.

The Jaguars’ first message was winning the face-off and getting a shot off within 15 seconds. Northwood goalie Eric Franklin made the save, but he was under attack the rest of the night. Carrboro sophomore Chad Osborne scored the first goal in just 1 minute, 7 seconds, and he found the back of the net twice more for a 3-0 lead with just 3:01 elapsed in the game.

“We worked on our fast-break offense over the past week,” said Osborne, who finished with five goals. “Everybody is doing a good job of getting the ball to us. We’re small, but we make up for with speed and quickness.”

Carrboro remained unbeaten at 10-0 overall and 5-0 in Conference 6. Northwood dropped to 9-3 and 1-2 in conference play.

Turning Point

Carrboro freshman Gordon Guest scored twice, but his major contribution was winning face-offs while filling in for Chase Bolesky, who is out with a broken thumb. Guest’s success has allowed Carrboro to maintain its style of play with quick attacks. Bolesky’s injury otherwise could have been a turning point that slowed the Jaguars.

“Gordon has really stepped up for us with our main face-off man out,” Osborne said. “Once we win the face-off we’re moving down the field.”

Three To Know

Jake Melville, Carrboro: The junior led the Jaguars with seven goals, including three during the second quarter, to build a 14-4 halftime lead.

Andrew Montross, Carrboro: A 6-foot-4, 225-pound senior, he scored three goals.

Lars Hoeg, Northwood: The freshman led the Chargers with three goals. His second-quarter goal helped trim Carrboro’s led to 8-4, but the Jaguars went on 6-0 run before halftime.

More Goals

Carrboro’s balanced lineup featured six players who scored. The other two were Logan Marro with two and John Cox with one.

Northwood’s eight goals were the most scored on Carrboro this year. Also scoring for the Chargers were Jacob Bass, 2; Tanner Althoff, 2; and Quinn Rooze, 1.

They Said It

“They shocked us with the early goals. We had five turnovers and they scored four goals. Northwood has to be more clutch, make better decision and hustle.” – Northwood coach Kevin McDaniel.
