Chapel Hill runs by Jordan in girls lacrosse
After his team’s 13-goal loss to a talented Cardinal Gibbons squad on Wednesday, Chapel Hill girls lacrosse coach Dan Segal made one thing clear with his group of players.
“I told them they had yesterday to be upset about it, but then starting today, that’s behind us,” he said.
Message received.
Playing in its third game over the course of four days, Chapel Hill (9-3, 5-2) bounced back and won 21-4 on the road over Jordan (1-9, 1-5) on Thursday.
With the victory, the Tigers have won four of their last five contests.
Led in scoring by sophomore attacker Anne Crabill and junior midfielder Lundy Fine (four goals apiece), Chapel Hill jumped out to a big lead early on. By halftime, the Tigers led 14-2.
Despite trailing, the Falcons continued to fight and Jordan coach Craig Day was pleased with his team’s effort.
“They come ready to play and they give you their best effort,” Day said.
Three to know
Lundy Fine, Chapel Hill: Entering Thursday’s game, Fine had recorded 16 goals and eight assists in 10 games before turning in a stellar performance against the Falcons. In addition to leading with four goals, she also dished out two assists.
Morgan Walton, Chapel Hill: In total, 11 different players found the back of the net for Chapel Hill, including two defenders, one of which was Walton, a senior co-captain.
Taylor Phillips, Jordan: One of only three seniors on Jordan’s roster, Phillips played the way one would expect a veteran leader to. Her three goals led the Falcons and when goalie Amber Ashman left with an injury late in the second half, it was Phillips who filled in between the pipes.
They said it
“We did a really good of job of subbing in different players at positions they don’t usually play just to get more practice all around.” Morgan Walton, pleased with her teammates’ ability to turn in a good effort after Wednesday’s loss and was particularly happy with how some players got experience at new positions.
