Nick Elston is perfect in shutout of Oxford Prep

Nick Elston pitched a perfect game last week as Chapel Hill shut out Oxford Prepartory School 10-0 at Tiger Field.

Elston, a senior righthander, retired all 15 Oxford batters he faced, striking out 10 and walking zero. Because of the state’s 10-run “mercy rule,” the game ended after Chapel Hill scored its 10th run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

“I have seen one (a perfect game) before in person,” said Chapel Hill head coach Lee Land, who’s coached high school ball for 10 years.

Elston got plenty of help at the plate from the Tigers, who played errorless ball in the win Wednesday. They were paced by Garrett Liebe (1-3 with a 3-RBI double) and Blake Rasnake (2-3, RBI).

Tyler Hansen (1-2, RBI), Nick Hebert (1-3, RBI), Drew Govert (1-3), Ryan Lonegan (1-3) and Colin Liebe (1-1, RBI) all had one hit for Chapel Hill. Infielder Connor Stough drove in one run with a bases-loaded walk.
