Jordan-Matthews softball powers past rival Chatham Central
A seven-run fourth inning powered Jordan-Matthews to an 8-1 rivalry nonconference softball win on the road against Chatham Central Thursday.
“They came in with the right mindset,” said Jordan-Matthews coach Chris Mote. “They did their job with the bats and they’ve done that all week.”
Holly Clark went the distance in the circle to take the win for the Jets (19-1), giving up no earned runs on five hits and one walk, with two strikeouts.
Starter Victoria Collins was the pitcher of record for the Bears (12-6). In 3 and 2/3 innings, she yielded six earned runs on eight hits, with one strikeout.
Dee Decristofaro had two hits, including a double, three RBIs and a run scored and Hanna Stackhouse had three hits and a pair of runs to lead the Jets at the plate.
Avery Williamson had two hits, including a double, and Madison Davis had one hit and one run to lead the Bears.
Chatham Central coach Jimmy Rodriguez lamented eight errors the Bears committed in the contest.
“The errors,” he said. “You can’t beat a program of that caliber with eight errors. We had one, total, the last four games. You can’t win with eight errors.”
The game was scoreless through three innings. Both sides had opportunities, but were unable to convert.
The hot fourth inning both started and ended on Clark’s bat. She led off with a single and scored the first run of the rally, and the game, on a Tomora Carter single alongside Caroline Webster. She later singled to drive in Marshall Philips to put the seventh run of the inning on the board.
“Not really bragging, but with this bunch right here, they’re subject to do it in every game,” Mote said.
Chatham Central settled down after the fourth, but was unable to recover from the seven runs.
“Just go forward,” Rodriguez said. “That was an eight-game win streak and we just laid an egg tonight. But we’ll be all right.”
