Prep notebook: South Johnston football hires Matt Riggsbee from West Craven

It didn’t take long for South Johnston to fill its head football coach vacancy. The Trojans are bringing in Matt Riggsbee from West Craven, where he turned the Eagles into strong 3A program, just three weeks after losing head coach Hunter Jenks to Clayton.

According to the New Bern Sun-Journal, Riggsbee informed his team on the move on Friday. He was 26-22 in four years, including a first-round win against South Johnston in 2014 and an 8-5 record this year.

Regional tennis: The 4A Mideast individual boys tennis regionals were pushed back one day and will conclude Monday. In the 3A Mideast, Union Pines is advancing Will Hart and Ben Williams to states after they captured the regional title.

No Cap-8 soccer title: After lightning stopped Friday’s girls soccer game between Leesville Road and Millbrook just 20 minutes into a scoreless game for the Cap-8 Conference title. The Pride and Wildcats were named co-champions and flipped a coin for the top playoff seed, which Millbrook won.

Tournaments stopped: Excessive rain forced the cancellation of the Two Rivers 3A baseball and softball tournaments and the Big 8 baseball tournament.

Softball titles: Princeton softball completed a season sweep of defending state champion North Duplin to win the Carolina 1A title on Saturday.

Lee County defeated Gray’s Creek 10-3 Friday in the Cape Fear Valley 3A tournament final. The Lee County baseball team hosted Union Pines for tournament championship on Saturday.

In Big 8 3A softball, Northwood defeated Orange 5-3 Saturday for the rights to the top seed from the league entering the playoffs.

Lacrosse playoffs: There were a few surprises over the weekend in the lacrosse playoffs as the one-loss Apex girls fell at home to one-loss Wakefield 16-8 and the undefeated Broughton boys lost 19-7 to visiting Holly Springs.

Heritage and Millbrook are in the third round of the boys playoffs for the first time.

A few lacrosse playoff matchups were pushed back from Friday to Saturday. The third round is scheduled for Wednesday but teams can mutually agree to play Tuesday.
