Playoff roundup: only one 1-seed left in East baseball playoffs
Two rounds into the N.C. High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs, the only No. 1 seed remaining in the East is 1A Whiteville.
Cardinal Gibbons (4A) was toppled 5-4 by Greenville’s J.H. Rose on Saturday, while Cleveland (3A) fell 5-3 to Topsail on Friday. North Johnston was edged 3-2 by Holly Ridge’s Dixon High, the No. 32 seed, in the first round.
The third round, which is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday (but some teams may play Monday to avoid rain), features some great matchups.
When Rose hosts Fuquay-Varina, the two head coaches will have combined for more than 1,450 wins. Rose’s Ronald Vincent is the state’s all-time leader with more than 850 and Fuquay’s Milton Senter joined the 600 club last spring.
Even with Cleveland out, Triton, Corinth Holders and South Johnston are carrying Two Rivers 3A torch with road games in the third round.
In boys lacrosse, Middle Creek fell in overtime 11-10 at Wilmington’s Hoggard High. Hoggard will host Cardinal Gibbons in the 4A East final on Tuesday.
