NCAC announces all-conference honors for spring sports
The North Central Athletic 1A Conference has announced its all-conference awards for its spring sports, with conference champions Voyager Academy (baseball), Franklin Academy (golf, soccer), East Wake Academy (softball) and Raleigh Charter (tennis) leading the way in their respective sports.
Voyager Academy’s Aaron Beasley earned baseball’s pitcher-of-the-year honors and Pete Shankle was named coach of the year after helping the Vikings (17-5) breeze undefeated through their NCAC slate and to reach the state quarterfinals of the N.C. High School playoffs.
Woods Charter’s Isabel Pearce (49 goals) was named the NCAC’s soccer player of the year, while the Wolves’ Graeme Stewart was coach of the year.
Franklin Academy (22-2) placed six players on NCAC soccer’s all-conference first team after rolling undefeated (15-0) through league games and making it to the 1A state championship game last weekend.
Franklin sophomore Marlayna Frutiger was named the goalkeeper of the year, giving up 14 goals all year, while saving 95 shots for a goals-against average of 0.8 per game.
Frutiger was joined on soccer’s all-conference first team by Franklin’s: junior Kiera Stephens, the Patriots’ leader in goals (45); Anna Krussow (30 assists); defenders Danielle Morrison and Kiley Hughes; and ninth-grader Niamh Stephan.
Voyager’s Don Ladd was named NCAC softball coach of the year and his Vikings won NCAC softball’s sportsmanship award despite finishing last in the conference standings (0-7, 3-11 overall).
Franklin Academy senior Jacob Faulkner was the NCAC’s baseball player of the year. He batted .440 and scored 30 of the Patriots’ 150 runs this spring.
Roxboro Community School’s Grace Sherron, a .464 hitter with 20 RBIs, was named the NCAC’s softball player of the year, while Sarah Bradshaw of River Mill was pitcher of the year. Despite an 8-7 won-lost record, Bradshaw matained an ERA of 1.75 while leading River Mill in hitting (.725 with 17 RBIs).
Raleigh Charter (16-1) went undefeated in NCAC tennis matches before winning its second straight state championship. The Phoenix’s Ryan Griffin was named coach of the year and saw four of his players placed on the all-conference first team: player of the year Chinna Baskaran, Joseph Fisher, Harrison Tseng and Revant Birla.
Raleigh’s Brandon Wacaser and Jake Satrisky, who clinched the state championship match at 5-2 with a win at No. 3 doubles, earned honorable mention, and Ryan Griffin was the tennis coach of the year.
NCAC all-conference honors for golf were decided by the players’ cumulative stroke average throughout the season. Five golfers from conference champion Franklin Academy finished in the season’s top 10 – NCAC champion Grant Lewis, Ryan Lamm, Cody McDaniel, Daniel Nunn and Jacob Burgess.
Franklin’s Michael Armstrong was named golf coach of the year.
