Cap-8 all-conference softball, 2016

Wakefield’s Amanda Dacunto and Millbrook’s Katie Thomas were both too good.

When it came down to the Cap-8 Conference softball player of the year vote, it was a tie. The seniors shared the league’s top honor when the all-conference selections were recently announced.

Dacunto, a senior shortstop, helped lead the Wolverines to their first third-round playoff appearance this season. Dacunto led the team with 34 RBIs from the cleanup spot. She also belted out six home runs on the year.

Thomas, the Wildcats’ senior third baseman, had a team-best seven doubles from the No. 3 hole. She finished with 32 hits, second only to Millbrook leadoff A.J. Valero.

Wake Forest senior Chelsey Cunningham was named pitcher of the year. Her daunting change-up against Wilmington Hoggard in the playoffs lifted the Cougars to the fourth round. She tossed seven strikeouts against Hoggard.

Wakefield’s Danny Inscoe took coach of the year honors, leading his team to a 15-8 record and third-place conference finish.
