Cap-8 all-conference baseball, 2016
Sanderson’s Cory Wood was named the Cap-8 Conference baseball player of the year after all-conference honors were recently announced.
The senior shortstop’s coach Todd Laughlin earned coach of the year honors. Sanderson won the Cap-8 title and finished 20-8. The Spartans fell to Wilmington Hoggard in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A playoffs.
Wood batted a .455 this season and started in every game. He captured 40 hits, 37 runs and 21 RBIs.
Sanderson went 12-3 in conference action to top Heritage and Millbrook, forcing the most runs among Cap-8 teams with 108. Sanderson, including Wood, placed eight players on the all-conference list.
Millbrook senior hurler Reid Herring was named pitcher of the year.
Herring finished 5-1 in eight starts on the mound this season. He struck out a conference-best 47 and managed 13 runs and 11 hits at the plate.
Millbrook’s Tyler Snead and Leesville Road’s Landon Choboy shared the newcomer of the year. Snead, a sophomore outfielder, led the Wildcats with 25 hits, including a double and a triple.
Choboy gathered a team-best 21 hits (five doubles) on the season.
