Prep notebook: Rosters set for NCCA East-West All-Star games
Chapel Hill’s Gina Kim won the prestigious American Juniors Golf Association tournament last week in Rochester, N.Y. Kim started the final day one stroke off the lead and carded a final-round 2-over-par 72 at the Country Club of Rochester to finish with a two-stroke victory over Emilia Migliaccio of Cary.
Kim ended up with an 8-over-par 288 total in the four-day tournament. The championshp came down to the final three holes with several golfers in contention. Kim birdied her final.
The second, third and fourth place finishers were all separated by one stroke.
Migliaccio claimed second with a tournament total of 10-over-par 290. Migliaccio entered the final round tied for eighth but charged into second place by carding a final-round 66, her lowest round of the week. She notched five birdies on the final day, with four coming on the back nine.
Micheala Williams of Athens, Ala., finished third at 11-over-par 291. Jaravee Boonchant of Bradenton, Fla., came in fourth with a 12-over-par 292.
Athens Drive’s Jennifer Chang came in fifth with a 14-over-par 294.
Kim, the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A champ, and Chang, the two-time NCHSAA 4A champ, were named all-Americans by USA Today. Both are rising juniors.
Migliaccio won the 4A title at Athens Drive as a freshman the year prior to Chang’s run but did not play as a sophomore or junior.
East-West All-Star games: The rosters are set for next month’s N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star games in Greensboro. The games, which feature recent graduates, coincide with the annual NCCA meetings, also in Greensboro.
The boys and girls basketball games are July 18 at the Greensboro Coliseum, the boys and girls soccer games are July 19 at MacPherson Stadium at Bryan Park and the football game is July 20 at Grimsley High’s Jameison Stadium.

All-region softball: The N.C. Softball Coaches Association has released its regional awards. About 300-400 players in all were honored as eight regions for each classification.

Wilson retirements: In the last few weeks, three Wilson County sports fixtures have retired. Beddingfield girls soccer coach Glenn Griffin retired after 29 years, Hunt boys basketball coach Dwight Taylor did the same after 24 years and Hunt football coach/athletics director Stevie Hinnant retired after 10 years as AD and three as head football coach.
