Greater Neuse River 4A All-Conference baseball, softball, girls soccer, boys tennis, boys golf, track and field
Clayton teams led the way in the spring high school sports season in the Greater Neuse River Conference, earning conference championships in boys golf, girls soccer and boys tennis.
Klein Evans was named GNRC Player of the Year in tennis as the senior Comet once again dominated in singles play, winning the individual conference title before going on to finish as runner-up in the state 4A singles title for the second year in a row.
Evans’ younger brother, Banks, along with Clayton senior Brooks Campbell won the doubles championship, dropping just three games over four GNRC tournament matches.
The Comets also won the conference championship in golf, holding off Harnett Central by half a point at the end of the conference year. Alex Casatelli, Aaron Haberkorn, Matt Hayes, Brady Hooks and Davis Lanier were part of the successful youth movement for Clayton.
In girls soccer, the Comets also reigned supreme going 22-2 before falling in overtime in the third round of the state 4A playoffs.
Nicole Guerrero was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year, along with Knightdale’s Erin Giunco, due in part to anchoring a Comets defense that surrendered just 25 goals all season long.
West Johnston’s Robin Pollard took home the league’s Offensive Player of the Year award, scoring 59 goals on the season to best the all-time country scoring record set by Pollard herself last season (58). Pollard now has 140 goals entering her senior year.
The Wildcats won the GNRC championship in baseball, going 12-2 in league play. West Johnston’s Tony Mack won Player of the Year as he led the champions in hits (27), runs (26), RBIs (24) and doubles (9).
East Wake’s Will Davis was named Pitcher of the Year as his six complete game wins in conference play propelled the Warriors to their first home playoff game since 2007, a game East Wake won thanks to a three-hit complete game win supplied by Davis.
In softball, Garner and West Johnston each posted 20 wins and were led by the best hitter and pitcher in the GNRC, respectively.
The Trojans’ Alisha Josey, who will play her college ball at Appalachian State University, led Garner in hits, RBIs and runs while posting a .468 batting average.
West Johnston’s Megan Mills, a standout pitcher for the Wildcats since her freshman season, once again paved the way to another successful campaign. Mills has signed to play at East Carolina University next season. She struck out 179 batters in 123 innings of work with a 0.976 earned-run average.
Southeast Raleigh maintained its dominance in track and field in the GNRC sweeping both the boys and girls conference championships. The Bulldogs won 11 of 17 events in the girls championships while the boys bested Garner by 30 points for the title.
Taking home individual MVP honors at the conference championships and Players of the Year were Roleville’s Montae Myers and Lauren White.
Myers won the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the 110-meter hurdles in the conference championships and went on to tie for 10th in the 100 meters at the N.C. High School Athletic Association boys track and field championships.
White, a state champion from the indoor track season, similarly dominated the field in the GNRC, taking home first place in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and finishing second in the long jump. In the NCHSAA 4A championships, White was busy finishing second in the long jump, third in the 100 and fifth in the 200.
A third Rolesville standout performer, Blake McShea was awarded Player of the Year in golf as he won his second individual conference championship by eight strokes at Keith Hills Country Club.
