Millbrook basketball player shoots his way onto SportsCenter

The Millbrook boys’ basketball team may not have won this weekend’s Powerade State Games, but it sure won SportsCenter with Patrick Dorsey’s full-court shot.

It was the top highlight on the program’s Top 10 “Plays of the Day,” beating out professional sports teams, including an MLB catch in the stands.

The Wildcats were playing Northwest Guilford in the bronze-medal contest of the State Games at the time of Dorsey’s shot.

The rising senior played on Millbrook’s Cap-8 Conference championship team last season, and he has certainly garnered props as the star of a highlight that made national television Monday.

The 6-foot-5 Dorsey secured a defensive rebound with one hand at the Northwest baseline. He swiveled around to face his own hoop with the clock winding down and catapulted the ball across the hardwood and through the net. The shot didn’t make it in time to beat the buzzer, but it didn’t take away from Dorsey’s heroics for a Millbrook team that took third in the State Games (the Lady Wildcats of Millbrook won the girls’ bracket to follow up their state title earlier this year).

The tweet of Dorsey’s spectacular shot on SportsCenter was pinned to the official Millbrook boys’ basketball Twitter page and retweeted 50 times. However, the initial video clip the page used to nominate the highlight was retweeted nearly 300 times.

It also showed Dorsey’s teammates greeting him in the huddle with hugs and cheers; he couldn’t help but smile himself. He scored a team-best 25 points against Northwest, and Millbrook went on to lose in the semifinals.

It was just another weekend of Raleigh’s high school basketball offseason.
