In the four years of The News & Observer Cup competition among area high schools, Millbrook is our first time two-time winner.

The N&O Cup adds up points in each of the nine top-15 area rankings from throughout the year. Rankings are not done in every sport, and lacrosse rankings are only top-10. There are three top-15 rankings for each of the three athletic seasons.

Millbrook captured the 2015-16 title in the closest race yet. The Wildcats earned 50 points, one ahead of Cardinal Gibbons, three ahead of Green Hope and four ahead of Leesville Road.

Millbrook, which also won the 2013-14 title, was No. 8 in football, No. 11 in wrestling, No. 1 in girls basketball, No. 3 in boys basketball and No. 7 in girls soccer.

Leesville Road and Cleveland were each ranked in six of the nine sports that factor into the Cup standings.

South Granville, which tied for fifth with Middle Creek, was the highest-ranked 2A team. Orange, at No. 7, was the top 3A team, No. 12 Ravenscroft was the top NCISAA team and No. 22 Princeton was the top 1A team.

In total, 53 different schools ended the year in an N&O top-15 ranking.

No. 1 rankings were held by Cardinal Gibbons (volleyball), Franklin Academy (boys soccer), Middle Creek (football), Orange (wrestling), Cary (boys basketball), Millbrook (girls basketball), Green Hope (baseball), South Granville (softball) and Carrboro (girls soccer).

The four N&O Cup champs are Green Hope (2012-13), Millbrook (2013-14), Broughton (2014-15) and Millbrook (2015-16).
