Southern Lee looking for more consistency

Southern Lee almost played two different schedules last year. Some weeks, the Cavaliers were a punishing team that engineered big early wins. Then, they went through a four-game skid where nothing seemed to go right.

Getting a consistent execution on a week-to-week basis is football coach Don Simon’s goal this season.

“Defensively we wouldn’t make tackles, and then all of a sudden we were spectacular,” Simon said. “Offensively, we would put up 21 points and then couldn’t score.”

Who starts at QB?

Noah Terhune took over late last year and seemed to steady things with his passing, but Ishois Times is a game-changer with his legs. Simon said it will come down to which quarterback makes the best decisions. If Times does not line up at QB, he’ll be moved to wideout.

“Both of them move the offense very well, and they both have their distinct positives,” Simon said.

What will be a team strength?

The Cavaliers should move the ball on the ground with Jarvis Jackson running behind an offensive line that brings back Joe Kelly and Jayson Land. The front seven on defense has experience with linebacker Dan Long and lineman Ethan Lovick.

Can the Cavaliers keep trending upward?

In the last two years, Southern Lee has won 14 games, a school record for any two-year period since it opened in 2006.

“We’re winning games, but we’re not winning the ones we’re not supposed to yet. I think we’re probably a year away from being able to stand on our own two feet,” Simon said. “I’m happy with where we are. I think we’re on schedule.”
