Edgerton and Mudcats walk-off in season finale in Zebulon

Jordan Edgerton broke a scoreless tie in the ninth with a walk-off double scoring Dylan Moore while lifting the Mudcats to a 1-0 season finale victory versus the Dash at Five County Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The Mudcats (52-87, 23-46) finished the season with a five-game winning streak, at 4-0 in September and with their third series sweep of the year. Monday’s season finale also ended in just an hour and 44 minutes and was the fastest nine-inning game in Mudcats history.

Winston-Salem’s (56-83, 28-41) Tanner Banks gave up the game-winning double to Edgerton in the ninth and took the loss despite working through eight scoreless with eight strikeouts. Banks (6-4, 3.99) started the final frame by walking Moore before allowing Edgerton’s game-winning hit to left.

Edgerton was 2-for-4 with a single in the seventh and the game-winning, walk-off double in the ninth. Edgerton drove in one run in Monday’s season finale and finished the season with at least one RBI over each of his final 10 games. He also closed the year batting .396/.429/.623 with 19 RBI over his final 14 games.

The walk-off hit was Edgerton’s second of the season and Carolina’s seventh of the season. It was also their second straight walk-off win after winning game two of Sunday’s doubleheader on a bases-loaded walk.

Wes Parsons started for the Mudcats, and like Banks, worked through eight scoreless frames. Parsons struck out four, walked three and allowed just two hits over a season-high eight innings pitched. He left after the eighth with 90 pitches (57 strikes) and finished with a game score of 82 while finishing without a decision.

Carlos Salazar (3-4, 4.06) pitched the ninth for the Mudcats and struck out three while earning the win. He closed the season with a save in his penultimate outing on Aug. 31 and a victory in Monday’s season finale.

Edgerton, Keith Curcio and Erison Mendez all had two hits in the final home win for Carolina and helped the Mudcats reached 52 wins on the season. The 2016 Mudcats matched the club record for fewest wins in franchise history. The 1992 Mudcats finished 52-92 and with a .361 winning percentage, while the 2016 squad finished with a winning percentage of .374.
