Mudcats 7, Wood Ducks 2 (Game 1)Wood Ducks 4, Mudcats 0 (Game 2)

Isan Diaz hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, and Cody Ponce pitched seven full innings while working through his first career complete game as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Down East Wood Ducks 7-2 in game one of a doubleheader at Grainger Stadium in Kinston on Wednesday.

Ponce (5-3, 3.26) struck out two, scattered seven hits and allowed just two runs over his seven inning complete game. The victory was hit third straight and his seven inning effort marked the seventh time (out of nine starts) where he was able to get through seven full innings in an outing.

Diaz was 1-for-3 and his grand slam in the fifth counted for his team leading eighth home run of the season. The grand slam was also Carolina’s first of the season, and it capped what was a five-run fifth for the Mudcats (25-20) in their series opening victory against the Wood Ducks (17-28).

Trent Clark started the fifth with a lead off single, and Luis Aviles followed with a double before Weston Wilson came through with a RBI single to left. Corey Ray then drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Troy Stokes Jr. had a single to then load the bases for Diaz before his home run to right.

The Mudcats collected all six runs and five hits in the fifth off Down East starter Emerson Martinez. They also scored once against Martinez (0-5, 6.83) in the third when Aviles scored from first on a double to left from Cooper Hummel.

Martinez allowed seven earned run on eight hits over five innings and took the loss. He also walked one and struck out four for Down East in game one.

Aviles was 2-for-3 with two runs, Diaz was 1-for-3 with a grand slam and four RBIs. Hummel was 1-for-2 with a RBI double and Wilson was 1-for-3 with a RBI single in the Carolina victory.

Reliever Scott Williams later worked the final two innings for the Wood Ducks and retired all six that he faced in consecutive order.

In game two, Down East starter Tyler Davis and reliever Brady Fiegl teamed on a one-hit 4-0 shutout of the Mudcats in game two. Max McDowell had the only hit for the Mudcats and was 1-for-2 in the loss.

The Wood Ducks (18-28) bounced back from a 7-2 game one loss with a shutout victory over the Mudcats (25-21) while evening the series at a game apiece and snapping Carolina’s three game winning streak.

Davis worked through four no-hit frames against Carolina and struck out three while walking one. He left the game after reaching 48 pitches (33 strikes) and with his club leading 3-0.

Fiegl (3-0, 1.59) worked the final three innings and allowed McDowell’s hit in the fifth, but finished with three strikeouts and faced just 10 over his three innings. Fiegl earned the win and combined with Davis on Carolina’s fourth shutout loss of the season.

Marcos Diplan (2-2, 5.50) started for the Mudcats and worked through the fifth with four runs allowed on six hits. He allowed a run scoring single to Josh Altmann in the third, gave up back-to-back home runs to Michael O’Neill and Altmann in the fourth and allowed a sac fly to Ledarious Clark in the fifth. Diplan finished the start with 71 pitches (44 strikes) over five innings and with five strikeouts against two walks.

Altmann was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs in the game two victory for the Wood Ducks. O’Neill also had two hits and was 2-for-3 with two runs.

The Mudcats and Wood Ducks will wrap up the series at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at Grainger Stadium. Right-hander Freddy Peralta will start for the Mudcats, while lefty Wes Benjamin goes for the Wood Ducks.
