Mudcats 5, Nationals 3
Jose Briceno delivered a one-out, tie-breaking RBI single and Keith Curcio added a run-scoring forceout during the eighth inning Thursday night to give the Carolina Mudcats a 5-3 Class A Carolina League baseb all victory Thursday night against Potomac.
With the score 3-3, the Nationals brought on reliever Derek Self to start the eighth. With one out, Sal Giardina singled and went to second on a throwing error by shortstop Stephen Perez. Briceno followed with his run-scoring hit. After Reed Harper was hit by pitch, Sean Godfrey singled to load the bases for Curcio.
Potomac put runenrs on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but David Peterson replaced Jorge Zavala and struck out Drew Ward to end the threat.
The Nationals got a two-out single in the ninth, but Khayyan Norfork struck out swinging to end the game.
The game was held up for about 13 minutes in the ninth inning because of a power outage.
The teams will meet again at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
