Salem rolls after wiping out early Carolina Mudcats lead
The Salem Red Sox found clutch hitting in a 13-hit attack to cruise past the Carolina Mudcats 7-2 Tuesday night in Class A Carolina League baseball.
The Mudcats (40-42) struck for a run in the third inning when Johan Camargo tripled and scored on a Reed Harper sacrifice fly.
Salem, however, responded with two, two-out runs in the fourth inning on a Jordan Procyshen double and a Jose Vinicio single.
The Red Sox (43-39) added insurance in the fifth and chased Carolina starter Andrew Waszak (5-6) three batters in to the inning. Sean Furney came in to face Yoilan Cerse with one down and runners on first and second base. Cerse pounced on the first pitch and sent a three-run homer over the left field wall for a 5-1 lead.
The second game of the series will start at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. Salem will send Trey Ball (6-6, 3.50 ERA) to the mound against Seth Webster (3-5, 2.85).
