Charlotte batters Durham Bulls 17-6
The Charlotte Knights hit two grand slams, and Durham committed seven errors Tuesday night en route to a 17-6 win over the Bulls in the series opener at BB&T BallPark.
The second-place Knights (49-37) scored in every inning except the sixth, forcing eight Durham (44-41) pitchers to throw 222 pitches in the defeat. Two of Durham’s pitchers were position players Vince Belnome and JP Arencibia, who combined to pitch the eighth.
With the Bulls trailing 6-0 entering the fifth, Luke Maile drilled a two-run homer, his fourth of the season and second against the Knights. Corey Brown and Nick Franklin each hit two-run homers in the eighth.
Jose Dominguez (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing one run in the first inning, his only inning of the emergency start.
Jason Coats swatted a grand slam in the fifth inning off of Ernesto Frieri to jump the lead to 10-2. Then in the eighth, Chris Marrero took out Arencibia to deep left field for Charlotte’s second grand slam.
Junior Guerra (1-3) worked five innings, fanning a season-high nine batters to earn the victory.
The series continues with the middle game Wednesday night at 7:05 with Robert Zarate (1-0, 0.69 ERA) starting against Charlotte’s Brad Penny (4-3, 3.98).
