Carolina Mudcats win 9-4 to sweep Salem Red Sox
Consecutive three-run innings in the fourth and fifth helped the Carolina Mudcats dispatch the Salem Red Sox 9-4 on Thursday night to sweep the three-game series.
After Salem took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Carlos Franco delivered a three-run home run for the Mudcats in the fourth off Salem starter Teddy Stankiewicz for a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, Keith Curcio tripled to right-center, knocking in Reed Harper with one out. Connor Lien drove in Curcio with a single, Lien then stole two bases before scoring on Dustin Peterson’s single for a 6-1 lead.
Peterson’s RBI single in the seventh and Lien’s two-run homer in the ninth provided added insurance for the Mudcats.
Max Povse (1-2) went six strong inning, allowing a run on four hits to go with three strikeouts.
The Mudcats now head to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for a four-game, weekend set against the Pelicans. First pitch is Friday at 7:05 p.m.
