Bulls’ bats silenced again by Braves in 5-0 loss

The Durham Bulls managed just two hits Sunday in a 5-0 loss at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, as the Gwinnett Braves completed a three-game sweep.

Left-hander Greg Smith (4-4) turned in a strong outing for Gwinnett, surrendering just two singles over six innings, before a pair of relievers held Durham hitless over the final three innings. Right-hander Bradin Hagens (1-3) took the loss despite allowing just one run on two hits and four walks over 51/3 innings.

In the fourth inning, the Braves (56-51) broke the deadlock, scoring a run on a two-out single by Jordan Lennerton. The 1-0 score held until the eighth, when Gwinnett opened the advantage by plating three runs behind four singles, an error and a wild pitch. In the ninth, Gwinnett plated one more when Joey Terdoslavich delivered a single with two outs.

Richie Shaffer and Luke Maile each tallied a hit for Durham (52-56), but the Bulls were shut out for the eighth time this season and the second time in six games against the Braves over the past seven days.

Durham will continue its 10-game homestand Monday when it will open a four-game series against the Indianapolis Indians. Right-hander Matt Andriese (2-2, 2.39 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Durham against right-hander Radhames Liz (3-3, 1.02). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
