Durham rally falls short against Norfolk
The Durham Bulls’ comeback attempt fell short Thursday night, dropping an 8-7 International League decision to the Norfolk Tides after an early five-run deficit.
Trailing 7-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, Durham got two runs. After the Tides (68-50) made it 8-4 in the seventh, the Bulls came back with three runs in the bottom half. Nick Franklin drew a bases-loaded walk and Mikie Mahtook smacked a two-run single to cut the deficit to 8-7. Durham (57-62), however, was not able to score again.
Norfolk stormed ahead in the second, scoring six runs and sending 10 men to the plate for a 6-1 advantage.
Durham would get one run back in the bottom of the second when Corey Brown launched a solo homer. The Tides extended the lead back to five in the sixth however, when Rey Navarro knocked a two-out double.
Jorge Rondon (3-1) earned the win, allowing two runs in two innings of relief, and Oliver Drake earned his 20th save of the season with a scoreless ninth. Matt Andriese (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) over five innings while striking out five.
Durham will take on Indianapolis in a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader Friday.
