Curcio, Peterson and Lien lead Mudcats to 7-4 series-clinching win

The trio of Keith Curcio, Connor Lien and Dustin Peterson combined for eight of the Carolina Mudcats’ 14 hits and four of their seven runs in the team’s 7-4 victory. The home win, combined with a Winston-Salem loss, brought the Mudcats (66-61, 32-26) within 4.5 games of first place in the second-half standings playoff race.

Carolina started the game with a two-run first after getting back-to-back hits off Wilmington (57-70, 19-38) starter Pedro Fernandez. Curcio started the first with a single to center and Lien followed with the same. Peterson then plated Curcio with a sacrifice fly, and an RBI groundout by Joey Meneses later scored Lien to put the Mudcats up 2-0.

Fernandez (L, 0-4, 9.26) allowed two first-inning runs and four two-out runs in the fourth while taking the loss. The Mudcats scored six runs and collected nine hits off Fernandez in the victory.

The victory put the Mudcats up 2-0 in the series and was the club’s sixth straight home win. It also clinched a series victory.
