Gebhardt delivers game winner in extras
Joseph Daris started the 10th inning with a triple to deep right-center and Ryan Gebhardt brought him in with a game-winning single to left to lead the Mudcats to a 4-3 walk-off win against Potomac at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Mudcats (13-17) had a 3-2 lead going into the ninth, but a misplay between Gebhardt and first baseman Joey Meneses between second and first allowed the Nationals (16-13) to score the tying run and force extras. The misplay did not result in an error, but it took away a victory from starter Max Povse and gave a blown save to Evan Phillips.
Povse pitched through seven full innings onand allowed two runs while scattering seven hits. He also finished with seven strikeouts.
Wes Parsons pitched a scoreless eighth before turning the game over to Phillips (W, 1-1, 1.29). Jose Marmolejos started the ninth with a leadoff double off Phillips and later moved to third on a groundout to first.
The Mudcats pulled their infield in and Phillips managed to get another groundball while facing Drew Ward, but a miscommunication between Gebhardt and Meneses allowed the ball to roll deep behind first. Meneses eventually recovered and used the misplayed grounder to record an out at first, but Marmolejos managed to score to tie the game.
Phillips finished the ninth without allowing another baserunner and then turned in a perfect tenth. Povse, Parsons and Phillips combined to strike out eight.
The Mudcats took a 1-0 series lead with Tuesday’s victory. The series will continue on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with RHP Ryan Clark (0-3, 6.12) starting for the Mudcats.
