Carolina Mudcats allow 4 home runs in 9-5 loss to Potomac
Jose Marmolejos and Matt Reistetter homered twice and combined to drive in five runs as the Potomac Nationals outlasted the Carolina Mudcats 9-5 in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
Reistetter was 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs. He homered in the fifth off Mudcats starter Ryan Clark and homered again off reliever Zach Quintana in the 10th.
Quintana (1-3) also allowed a two-run homer to Marmolejos in the 10th, but it was Reistetter’s that broke a tie in the final inning. Quintana worked the 10th and allowed four runs on three hits.
Marmolejos also homered off Clark in the fourth and was 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs. The Nationals went just 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left only two men on base.
Ryan Brinley (2-0) earned the win, but he did so only after blowing his first save of the season. He gave up a two-out RBI single to Joseph Odom in the ninth.
Odom was 3-for-5 in the Carolina loss. He tied the score in the ninth and also had an inside-the-park home run in the sixth. Potomac’s Dale Carey attempted to make a running catch on Odom’s home-run ball to right, but he tumbled over the low wall along the line and did not come up with the catch. Odom rounded the bases as the ball sat on the warning track dirt.
Jordan Edgerton also homered for the Mudcats. He smacked a two-run shot in the second off starter Boone Whiting for a 2-0 lead. The Nationals came back with three runs in the fourth and added one more in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Mudcats had multihit games from Keith Curcio, Joey Meneses, Odom and Braxton Davidson, but they were just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
