Carolina Mudcats blanked in doubleheader by Potomac
Jose Marmolejos, Alec Keller and Dale Carey drove in a run each to help the Potomac Nationals beat the Carolina Mudcats 3-0 in the opener of a Class A Carolina League baseball doubleheader Wednesday at Pfitzner Stadium.
Luis Reyes (3-2) and Ryan Brinley did the rest for Potomac, holding the Mudcats to six hits in the seven-inning contest.
Potomac swept both games after Greg Ross and Robert Orlan combined on a two-hit shutout in Game 2. Keith Curcio and Ryan Gebhart each had singles for Carolina in the second contest.
Enderson Franco (3-2) allowed five hits in six innings in the opener, but the Nationals were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, and with their pitching, that was all they needed.
Six Carolina players had a single apiece in Game 1, but the Mudcats were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
Carolina got a runner to third in the first inning, but Curcio was stranded there when Sal Giardina struck out swinging to end the threat. The Mudcats got runners as far as second base twice more, the second and the seventh innings, but couldn’t push anyone across the plate.
